What is Cognitive Hypnotherapy?

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is an evidence based solution focused therapy. It enables me to purposefully use a range of techniques ideas and tools to best support you in achieving your goals.

An Evidence-Based Approach

Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy (QCH) launched a unique research project in 2011. Using a team of QCH therapists, clients with anxiety and depression were assessed using the same outcome measures currently used to assess the effectiveness of talking therapies within the NHS. The pilot study was published in the Mental Health Review Journal in 2015. It recorded that, using 118 cases measuring the effectiveness of Cognitive Hypnotherapy for the treatment of depression and anxiety, 71% considered themselves recovered after an average of 4 sessions. This compared to an average of 42% for other approaches using the same measures (like CBT). To our knowledge, this is the only hypnotherapy approach to have been validated in this way. What is the difference between traditional hypnotherapy and cognitive hypnotherapy?

Traditional Hypnotherapy focuses on the therapist guiding you into a trance like state.  Cognitive Hypnotherapy believes hypnotic states are a naturally occurring state of mind.  For example, when you daydream during that meeting or getting lost in your thoughts whilst driving.  

What does Cognitive Hypnotherapy feel like?

When most people think of Hypnotherapy they think of a pendulum being swung and stage hypnosis.  Cognitive Hypnotherapy is more like having a chat, where a trance state is naturally orchestrated.  

Will I know what is happening when I am in a trance?

You will hear my voice and be in complete control of the conversation. Your unconscious will do most of the talking so you will never do or say something that is unacceptable for you.  I will be there to guide you and if anything, ever feels uncomfortable you can rest assured that you are in safe hands.  

Can I really change if I’ve had this problem for so long?

The answer to this is absolutely, yes you can We all have the ability to develop, learn and adapt. As long as you are committed to making a change then anything is possible.  If you have made it as far as viewing this website, then you are already embarking on your journey to making a difference.  

What will happen in between sessions?

From the very first session, you may notice things are already changing.  You may notice that you are starting to think differently.  This period is known as calibration.  It’s the time in which you will be reflecting on everything we have discussed in the session.   I may give you a master session in which I teach you some tools to use until we next speak.  Or I may ask you to complete some consolidation questions which really gets you thinking about the changes you have already made.  

How long does it take to see results?

Every client and their problem is unique so it varies but usually clients start to see benefits between 3-6 sessions.  However long it takes I will be here to support you and work out a plan that suits your needs and lifestyle.  

Will my sessions be confidential?

I work ethically and practice absolute confidentiality. Everything we discuss stays in the treatment space.  

How long do sessions last?

Sessions last between 50-60 minutes.
